“Be still, and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10

I woke up at 5:00 a.m. because I knew I needed to finish some chapter edits for my publisher. I was determined to be productive before the rest of the house woke up. I sat down at the computer, ready to get to work, only to find that my computer apparently needed a cup of coffee as badly as I did.

A frozen screen turned into a 20-minute system update, and just like that, my quiet writing window was gone.

Frustrated, I glanced at the clock.

5:21 a.m. I had accomplished nothing.

I looked at God and sighed, “I thought this morning was supposed to be for writing? I thought that was the plan?”

But in that moment, I sensed something different—a subtle shift in perspective. Maybe this wasn’t about my productivity at all. Maybe God had something better in mind.

His plan for me this morning wasn’t about words on a screen. It was about obedience and observation. He wasn’t waiting for my output; He was drawing me closer. My heart needed a reset more than my writing did.

What I thought would be a “check the box” morning turned into a quiet, much-needed spiritual check-up.

So instead of rushing, I paused. I asked God to help me see the day ahead the way He sees it. Turns out, not every morning needs to be productive. Some just need to be surrendered.

What about you? What’s one area of your life where you can release your grip on performance and instead lean into God’s presence?
